Mechanics of Writing is a writing course to instill confidence in the budding writer. Lack of confidence is often the one thing that the new writer lacks! Building confidence as a writer starts from the beginning with strong sentences, moves to well-developed paragraphs, and then transitions to essays.

This course will be broken down into the following:

  • Crafting a good sentence with a focus on word choice, good use of punctuation, avoiding repetition and appropriate use of different types of sentences.
  • Taking the strong sentence and putting it into a solid paragraph with coherent, relevant sentences to also include topic and conclusion sentences.
  • Moving from paragraphs to essays by learning the process: brainstorming topics, creating outlines, writing drafts, editing drafts, and turning it into a final product.

Becoming a good, confident writer requires consistent practice. As such, there will be a variety of smaller assignments throughout each week that should be worked on daily. This provides the necessary practice throughout the school year to develop and improve writing skills.
