Does your child need educational therapy?
Is your parent-sense telling you something is wrong with your child’s learning? Listen to it!
If your child is 9 years old or older and you don’t think he is reaching his full potential it might be time to have him evaluated.
Some areas of concern are reading struggles, trouble with basic math facts, issues with starting activities and staying on task (above and beyond just being a kid), frequent meltdowns during school, and avoiding school work altogether.
These might be signs of a learning issue.
The first step is to have him evaluated by an educational professional.
Educational testing can pinpoint exactly what he struggles with so that you can create a plan moving forward. Many parents are hesitant to do educational testing because it can be expensive and intimidating.
If you do some shopping around you will find that many testing practitioners take insurance which will drastically help reduce the cost. There are also practitioners that offer their testing services on a sliding scale based on income.
Many universities with large Education departments offer affordable testing done by graduate students. A little research should offer different affordable options for testing.
Most school systems offer educational testing for free but keep in mind that they are often unable to diagnose dyslexia or dyscalculia so if you suspect either of those, you will need to seek testing privately.
Once the testing is complete, you should have a clearer picture of what type of educational services your child needs.
There might be a few layers to services he requires like physical therapy, occupational therapy, dyslexia or dyscalculia intervention, dietary counseling and more.
Prioritize the services based on the duration of therapy and the needs of your child. Usually occupational or physical therapy are shorter term interventions versus reading or math intervention which can take years of consistent work.
Often, a good educational therapist can address most of your child’s learning needs through their services.
Willow Grove Academy offers reading intervention, math remediation, cognitive therapy, dysgraphia remediation and more.
